I don't like to use methanol or isopropyl alcohol because it dries and hardens the tire (absorbs the oil and closes the pores.) Sometimes that's what is needed on a tire, (but not for cutting or finishing in my experience.)

The local Ace hardware stores here have the motor for $25 and pulley's for about $8 each.
