Nov 9, 2017. #18. For those new to knife making, and considering jigs vs free-hand. It does not necessarily take 10,000 hours or 200 knives to get good. I have approximately 40 knives under my belt from what I can figure, grinding part time for just under 3 years now. Never used a jig, never even used a rest.

So, using the hollow grind as a jig has been around for over 100 years. Notice though, the author makes two very important points. First, leave a bit of the old bevel when grinding. I recommend this based on the discoveries of Metallographers. We know now that larger grits cause deep subsurface damage that weakens the steel at the edge.

I would add that the hollow grind will disappear after a couple of honings so you will end up with a flat surface anyway and the back edge can be rounded over as well to assist the cutting action. Hollow grinding is just a way of keeping the honing surface to a minimum width and only needs doing occasionally. Edited November 9, 2020 by Dennis J

Sharp drill bits are helpful in getting the best from the minilathe as well as the drill press, mill-drill, and even a hand drill.
