I use a 4x36 sander that is 1/3 horsepower to flatten parts and shape knife handles. It is very slow compared to a belt grinder, but for what it costs it is easy to live with on hobby type work. My 2x72 inch grinder has a 1.5 horse Dayton farm duty motor on it and a 3 speed step pulley with a top speed around 5000fpm.

I've had a coote for a long time and have been very happy with it. I first had a 3/4 hp variable speed motor and it wasn't enough hp for me. I like to flat grind. Now I have a 1 1/2 hp and I'm happy. I think its 1750 RPM with a 1 to 1 pulley set up, but I'm going to change that to slow it down a bit.

You will have one step down pulley on the motor. This will mean you need two belts. One from the motor to the shaft that is in the back and one for the main shaft. I used a strong hinge to mount the motor and a spring for tension. A back stand idler will have to be used for the small side of the shaft and one for the main contact wheel.

As regards the power loss I was referring to the specific application in the OP regarding use of a VFD to convert either 120 or 240 sources to three phase for a 3 phase motor to drive a belt grinder. My understanding is that under those conditions you give up a bit of brake horsepower if you use the 120.
